The medina was the centre of the city. It had many houses and narrow streets. Many craftspeople lived here. They made pottery, leather goods, and things from gold and silver.

People went to a market called a souk to buy things. It was very busy and sold things like pottery spices, perfumes, meat, fruit and vegetables.

People went to mosques to pray. The mosques often had clomes, courtyards and tall towers.

Most towns and cities had a water system and street lights. There were also hospitals, libraries and public baths. Houses were simple on the outside. Inside they had luxurius furniture, rugs and cushions. There wer beautiful tiles on the walls. They had gardens with fruit trees and flowers.
